The 17th annual Philadelphia Marathon is scheduled to begin at 7 a.m. Sunday. The start/finish line is at 22d Street and also the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, and organizers stated they expected 11,000 runners to challenge the 26.2-mile course.

A half-marathon, set to go off simultaneously as the marathon, has 9,000 registered runners. More than 50,000 spectators are expected to line the course to look at the marathon runners, organizers stated. The male and female winners will obtain $3,500 each.

John Crews of Raleigh, N.C., won last year’s event in 2 hours, 17 minutes, 15 seconds, and Jutta Merilainen of Ontario, Canada, was the leading lady finisher, in 2:46:44.

The marathon course runs via Center City to Penn’s Landing, University City, and Manayunk prior to winding along Kelly Drive and back again towards the Art Museum.
