Ann Curry Addresses Wrong School
We’re pretty positive that the “Today” show fact-checks its news stories. The NBC morning show’s news anchor, Ann Curry, could’ve used just a little help in that department more than the weekend.
Curry delivered a commencement tackle at Wheaton College in Massachussetts above the weekend, and she listed some with the school’s well-known alumni: Billy Graham, “60 Minutes” correspondent Lesley Stahl, film director Wes Craven and Todd Beamer, a single with the heroes of United Flight 93 on 9/11. Normal graduation stuff, right?
Yeah, there was just 1 trouble: Except for Stahl, all those people graduated from a diverse Wheaton College. In Illinois.
To her credit, Curry quickly apologized for the Massachussetts Wheaton inside a letter.
“I am mortified by my mistake, and can only hope the purity of my motive, to find a way to connect with the graduates and to encourage them to a life of service, will allow you to forgive me,” she writes, according for the Boston Globe. She also cites some well-known Wheaton (Mass.) alums that she ought to have mentioned, such as actress Catherine Keener and former New Jersey governor and EPA head Christie Whitman.
The school doesn’t seem too upset about it either. “She gave a great speech,” Wheaton spokesman Michael Graca tells the Globe. “She went out of her way to meet with students before her speech and to get information about the college.”
Wheaton edited out the references towards the Illinois Wheaton alumni from the transcript and video of Curry’s address; Graca says that was done so as not to “broadcast misinformation.”
Whatever the cause, we picture Curry’s grateful for that edit.
