Promising last week that she had “big plans” for this week, Crystal Bowersox showed that she isn’t a monolithic artist on stage, and that she is capable of undertaking different items. Although she has not played the piano in many years, the singer took a chance to demonstrate one more side of her abilities.

The audience loved the overall performance, offered their reactions. The judges, for probably the most component, also enjoyed the switch, but Simon Cowell cautioned her in his comments, and also the two engaged in a bit of a conversation whilst America viewed.

Randy Jackson said, “I love the outfit; I love the whole ensemble. I love the whole stilettos. You know, it’s a funny thing. I’m working on a record with the great Gladys Knight right now, and she would say you did that song proud. I liked the way you switched it up. I like seeing you play the piano like this. I thought it was another great performance by you.”

After Mr. Jackson made his comments, Ms. Bowersox said, “Tell Gladys I said hi.”

Ellen DeGeneres said, “You’re never not good. You’re always great, and that was another side of you, which means that you really are competing now.  You are in it to win it, and that was a wonderful, wonderful idea.”

Kara DioGuardi, who had suggested the idea of putting down her guitar last week, said this about how it worked out:  “I’m so glad you took that risk; I really am. I wanted to see another side of you, and there’s so many things about you that I love.  I just can’t wait to see what you do next.”

Judge Simon Cowell seemed concerned that Ms. Bowersox, who has presented herself as a folk singer/songwriter all season with an acoustic guitar, not stray too far from the identity she has established on the show and that is working for her.

He said:  “I think your song choice was sensational. I think the vocals at times were incredible at moments. The problem I have very quickly is the backing vocalists shouldn’t have been there because it made it old-fashioned. You are uncomfortable with the piano, so you were overthinking it, and what I’m most concerned about here, Crystal, is regardless of the advice you’ve been given–do not let this process suck the identity out of you.  What you were doing before was absolutely fantastic. I’ve had no issues with you whatsoever.”

Crystal responded:  “I just wanted to prove to myself that I could do something, you know, and I like the heels.”

Simon:   ”Crystal, all I’m going to say is that you’re the kind of artist–rare-who actually knows what they should be doing. I promise you, and I really sincerely mean this, with your talent–and I love your personality because you’re real–just do what’s comfortable with you, and don’t change into something which you’re not, because you don’t need to.

Crystal:  “I wouldn’t ever do anything that wasn’t comfortable, for me.”

Simon: “Ok, good.”

Now that she’s proven to herself, the other judges, and the audience that she can do other things, will Crystal return to her acoustic guitar next week?  Viewers will just have to tune in to see.

The results show Wednesday night will feature a performance by this week’s mentor, Usher, and another contestant will be eliminated from the competition. That will leave 9 to perform live next week.
