Dan Rostenkowski Dies At 82
Former Rep. Dan Rostenkowski, the Chicago Democrat who became the leading architect of congressional tax policy inside the Reagan era but later went to federal prison for corruption, died Wednesday, a family good friend mentioned. He was 82.
He was present in Chicago for that famously disastrous 1968 Democratic National Convention, and his association with that event sidetracked his otherwise meteoric political rise. By 1981, though, he had risen to enough prominence to become the Chairman with the influential Ways and Signifies Committee.
In that part, he oversaw passage with the Tax Reform Act of 1986, 1 of one of the most considerable overhauls of the tax code in American history. He also led the way on Medicare, welfare and Social Security reforms.
Funeral services for previous Congressman Dan Rostenkowski will probably be held at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church on Chicago’s North Side.
Church secretary Cristina Carrazco says the church will host a public wake for Rostenkowski on Monday from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. The funeral service will probably be Tuesday at 10 a.m. The burial will adhere to at St. Adalbert Cemetery in Niles.
Carrazco says the Mass will be celebrated by Monsignor Kenneth Velo, who is really a senior executive for Catholic collaboration at DePaul University in Chicago.
