Daniel Nava hits grand slam on first pitch
Daniel Nava, just recalled from Pawtucket, hit a grand slam home run into the Boston bullpen on the initial pitch he saw within the key leagues, staking emergency Red Sox starter Scott Atchison to a 5-2 second-inning lead against the Phillies.
The Red Sox scratched right-hander Daisuke Matsuzaka from Saturday’s commence with a forearm strain and placed him on the 15-day disabled list.
Atchison created his very first major league start in place of Matsuzaka. Dustin Richardson was recalled from Class AAA Pawtucket to take Matsuzaka’s roster spot.
Nava, a Switch-hitter batting left-handed and starting in left field, became the first Red Sox player to hit a grand slam in his very first Red Sox plate appearance since Rip Rapulski in 1960.
Inside the following inning, Nava again came to the plate using the bases loaded but could not check his swing and struck out. Marco Scutaro followed using a two-run single to give Boston a 7-2 lead.
Nava also doubled within the fifth inning. Manny Delcarmen took over for the mound to commence the fourth inning while using Red Sox leading 8-2.
