Detroit Free Press Marathon 2010
The 33rd annual Detroit Free Press Marathon began this morning with almost 20,000 runners participating inside the world’s only international race.
The 26.2-mile operate started under cool temperatures early this early morning at Fort and 2nd in Detroit, having a route that crosses into Canada and again into downtown by way of the Ambassador Bridge and Detroit/Windsor Tunnel.
Runners competed in several activities, including a 26.2-mile marathon, a 13.1-mile half marathon, a five-person relay, plus a 5K run/walk.
About a couple of,300 entered the 5K run, as well as the first-place finisher was August Pappas, a senior cross-country runner at Chelsea Large School, who finished in 15 minutes, 55 seconds.
Race organizers mentioned 19,700 runners registered inside the activities, with about 10,000 in the half marathon. Runners were released in several waves to commence the race.
Participants in the marathon, half-marathon and 5K races hail largely from Michigan. But athletes also had been coming from Japan, Ireland, Venezuela, France and Pakistan, mentioned Brian Birney, race director.
