George Huguely Arrested
A 22-year-old University of Virginia lacrosse player from Chevy Chase has been charged with murdering a woman’s player on the university, Charlottesville law enforcement said.
George Huguely V, a previous All-American player at Landon School, was arrested Monday morning and charged with first-degree murder in the death of 22-year-old Yeardley Love, of Cockeysville, Md. Witnesses told police that the pair, both seniors, had been inside a romantic relationship, police stated.
Law enforcement stated they received a call about 2:15 a.m. Monday for a possible alcohol overdose at Love’s apartment but discovered obvious physical trauma to her entire body, police stated. Love was observed in bed by a roommate, law enforcement said.
Hugely was discovered at his apartment and arrested about 6 a.m.
University president John Casteen released a statement expressing sympathy for Yeardley’s household, teammates and close friends.
“That she appears now to have been murdered by another student compounds this sense of loss by suggesting that Yeardley died without comfort or consolation from those closest to her,” he stated.
The 6-foot-2, 209 pound Huguely graduated as an All-American lacrosse player and was the quarterback of the school’s league championship team. During the Duke lacrosse scandal, Huguely and his father have been asked to comment in regards to the scenario in which the players had been later observed to are already wrongly accused of rape.
The younger Huguely expressed help for that players, some of whom have been previous teammates. Huguely’s father mentioned he had talked to his son about staying out of those types of situations.
“Regardless of what winds up happening, you have to learn from this experience and take what you can from it,” George Huguely IV told the Washington Post. “You always have to remember and can’t let yourself be in a situation where something like this could happen.”
