Giant Oarfish Found Dead
A specimen with the 11-foot-long giant oarfish – the world’s longest bony fish – was found yesterday in Bovallstrand, Sweden. The fish, also known as the “king of herrings,” hasn’t been observed in Sweden inside the final 130 years.
On May 11, a giant oarfish (Regalecus glesne) was found out on Sweden’s western coast in the village of Bovallstrand. Kurt Ove Eriksson, who found out the fish, at first believed the behemoth was “a large piece of plastic material.” The dead king of herrings was taken to the House with the Sea museum in Lysekil, Sweden.
The giant oarfish can develop up to practically 40 feet (12 meters) – here are some movies of the veritable log o’ fish.
