Daylight and tapering of winds in parts of western and central Iowa are allowing Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) snowplow operations to resume in these areas, revealing the condition of roadways and discovery of vehicles blocking roads. Efforts are underway to remove vehicles and restore roadways in these areas to normal winter driving conditions.

The southbound and northbound lanes of Interstate 29 have reopened. The left lane of Interstate 29 near mile marker 127 at Sloan remains closed due to an overturned semi-tractor trailer. I-29 from the Iowa border to Sioux Falls, S.D. remains closed.

The eastbound lanes of I-80 have reopened. The westbound lanes of I-80 remain closed, but are expected to reopen later this morning.

Winds will taper off gradually today from the west to east, which will allow additional crews to return to the roadways.

The condition of roadways in areas where snowplows are still pulled is unknown, but it is likely many are impassable due to the high winds and snow that continued overnight. The following roads are known to be blocked.

  • U.S. 20 westbound: The road is closed between Webster County Road P-73 (Duncombe) and exit 136, Iowa 17/Webster County Road R-21 due to a stalled vehicle.
  • U.S. 52: The road is closed in both directions between Dubuque County Road D-10 (Rickardsville) and Iowa 136 (Luxemburg).
