John Boccieri
Democrats picked up two much more votes in favor of their health-care package Friday, as Ohio Rep. John Boccieri (D) announced that he would support the final measure right after having opposed the original House bill in November. Fellow Ohio Democrat Charles Wilson, who had been publicly undecided, also issued a news release saying he would vote “yes.”
“I is going to be voting yes for the bill,” Boccieri mentioned at a news conference outside the Capitol, flanked by constituents from his northeast Ohio district.
Boccieri said Thursday’s release of a preliminary score from the Congressional Spending budget Office — especially its estimate that the well being bill will cut the deficit by a lot more than $138 billion in the next 10 years — helped to alter his mind. “I was very encouraged by the budget results we got,” Boccieri mentioned.
Boccieri mentioned he was also inspired from the story of Natoma Canfield — the leukemia patient from Ohio whose plight was highlighted lately by President Obama. He said it reminded him of his own mother’s battle with breast cancer.
“I want my mom to know that I’m standing up today and performing what I believe is right,” he mentioned.
Boccieri stated he was changing his vote even though “a whole lot of folks are telling me that this could cost me my job.” He faces a tough reelection race, and Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) won his district within the 2008 presidential race.
