Juneteenth 2011 Celebrations
The 18th yearly Juneteenth Celebration Parade is these days. Juneteenth, often known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, commemorates the announcement of the abolition of slavery in the Texas in 1865. President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on Sept. 22, 1862, with the effective date of Jan. 1, 1863.
Juneteenth commemorates June 18 and 19, 1865. June 18 could be the day Union Gen. Gordon Granger and 2,000 Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to consider possession with the state and enforce the emancipation of slaves.
Through the tireless efforts of people on the grassroots degree to those on the state and national ranges, Juneteenth celebrations are held in most, if not all, 50 states. Over 50 percent from the states now have some form of legislation or declaration creating Juneteenth as being a holiday or ’special day of recognition’.
