Kobayashi Arrested After Joey Chestnut Win Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Competition
Takeru Kobayashi was arrested Sunday following attempting to hop on phase following a rival’s win in the 95th annual Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest.
Joey Chestnut celebrated the Fourth of July by downing 54 hot dogs in 10 minutes. Moments later, Kobayashi, who did not compete as a result of contractual concerns with Major League Eating, tried to jump on phase wearing a “Free Kobe” shirt, but police arrested him. The 32-year-old eater won the competition six years in a row just before Chestnut bested him in 2007.
“If he was a real man, he’d be on the stage,” Chestnut said of Kobayashi right after winning the competitors.
Kobayashi was charged with obstructing governmental administration, resisting arrest, and trespassing.
“I came out and knew what I had to do,” Chestnut, who ate a record-setting 68 franks last yr, told reporters right after the competitors. “I was slower than I wanted to be”
The closest runner up was Tim “Eater X’ Janus, who ate a total of 45 dogs.
