The McEachern High School running back was found using a bullet wound to his head inside a Powder Springs, Georgia home. Clifton Steager, 39, the alleged shooter, was also found using a bullet towards the head.

Police, responding to the 911 call that somebody had a weapon, heard gun shots in the house. If they entered, one of the men, it isn’t clear which, was still alive. He later died.

Police believe the shooting had its roots in the domestic dispute. Steager used to date Bennet’s mother, 37-year-old Narjaketha Bennett. She, and someone else, Taiwan Hunter, 32, ran from the house after the shots were fired, the police told the Sporting News.

Rajaan Bennett had a bright future in front of him. He was recruited and signed a college scholarship with Vanderbilt University, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Football coach, Kyle Hockman, said Bennett was “just one of the best ever.”

“He includes a great head on his shoulders, a man that was the man in his household for a long time,” he told the paper. “Rajaan is both humble and hard working.”
