Well that didn’t get extremely long. Within the third quarter of 2010, a lot more individuals rented DVDs from kiosks for example Redbox than from retail stores including Blockbuster.

NPD Group says that for that initial time, movie rentals from standalone kiosk have a greater market share from the United States than those from brick-and-mortar stores.

Redbox says it started out market-testing its kiosks in 2004 at McDonald’s eating places within the Denver region. (Redbox started off as being a division of McDonald’s in 2002 and developed 12 kiosks then. Coinstar invested in Redbox in 2007, then obtained a controlling stake in 2009.)

After excellent consumer response, the test expanded in 2005 to Baltimore, Houston, Minneapolis-St. Paul, Salt Lake City and St. Louis. Right now, the company says, you’ll find more than 24,900 Redboxes across the contiguous 48 states in grocery stores (like Safeway), McDonald’s places, Walmarts, Walgreens stores and 7-Elevens.
