Keep in mind yesterday’s news about CBS 2 Tv reporter Serena Branson who allegedly endured a stroke although reporting live in the Grammys? Branson was not suffering from a stroke, but a symptom of “complex migraine“.

Video of the event quickly went viral, and doctors around the country quickly began speculating the reason for her confusion and garbled speech. A lot of imagined she’d endured a stroke.

But Dr. Neil Martin, Branson’s physician and chief of neurosurgery in the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, said it was a symptom of a “complex migraine.” The symptoms for that particular variety of migraines are related to small strokes and commonly misdiagnosed.

Soon following the now popular broadcast, Branson was reportedly feeling better. She was examined by paramedics and sent home to rest. She is doing effectively and it is eager to return to work.

What is Complex Migraine?

According to HealthCentral.Com, there are several types of migraine headaches. A “complex migraine” is one in which there are neurological symptoms such as weakness, loss of vision, or difficulty speaking in addition to the headache. In fact, a complex migraine may be mistaken for a stroke.

One theory about the cause of migraine headaches is that blood vessels in the brain suddenly narrow (or spasm) and then dilate; when the blood vessels dilate, the headache develops. During the spasm phase, certain parts of the brain may receive too little blood, and this may cause the stroke-like symptoms. However, unlike a stroke, blood flow is not permanently interrupted during migraine headaches, and the neurological symptoms are nearly always temporary.
