Staten Island Ferry Crashes Into Dock

A Staten Island ferry boat having a history of accidents struck a pier because it approached a terminal Saturday, seriously hurting at least one particular person and leaving as several as 35 with minor injuries.

The Andrew J. Barberi hit the pier at close to 9:20 a.m. because it approached the St. George Ferry Terminal on Staten Island.

Passenger Jason Watler, 30, of St. George, said he realized the ferry was moving quicker than usual since it approached the shore, became alarmed and began to run toward the back from the boat.

“It was not slowing down,” he said. “He was going too quick.”

Then, he heard a “a genuine huge boom.”

“I stumbled a little bit,” he mentioned. “People had been screaming. Individuals had been crying.”

Fire Department officials mentioned some passengers had been getting taken by ambulance to hospitals. Others have been becoming bandaged and comforted by firefighters at the scene.
