Mariner Energy Oil Rig Explosion
The U.S. Coast Guard has rescued 13 employees from a Mariner Energy production platform positioned about eighty miles off the Louisiana coast where there was an explosion and fire this morning.
The explosion took location close to 9:30 a.m., according to a Rebecca Broussard, director with the Office of Emergency Management for Vermillion Parish, La.
All 13 team members were rescued from the water, sporting safety fits and huddled together, mentioned Coast Guard Petty Officer Matthew Masachi. A neighborhood offshore supply boat called the Crystal Clear heard the emergency response call and was the initial to arrive on scene to pull them safely aboard.
The boat transferred the crew members to a nearby platform in which they were later airlifted to Terrebonne hospital in Houma, he mentioned. One with the team members was injured, though his status was unknown.
Mariner had reported a slight sheen on the water measuring about one nautical mile by one hundred feet, Masachi stated.

Deepwater Horizon Fire Video
An explosion at Deepwater Horizon offshore oil drilling platform, 50 miles away from Louisiana’s coast, left seven workers seriously injured and 11 others missing on Tuesday. The oil rig was nevertheless burning Wednesday morning.
Most of the 126 workers escaped the rig explosion and authorities are browsing the Gulf of Mexico for lifeboats.
A spokesman from Deepwater stated the trigger with the explosion is unfamiliar and Coast Guard environmental teams are waiting to evaluate any environmental harm.
At least 11 workers missing after oil rig explosion
According to reports, a massive oil rig explosion off the coast of Louisiana left 7 workers critically injured and a minimum of 11 others missing.
The explosion occurred about 50 miles southeast of Venice close to 10 p.m. on a rig called Deepwater Horizon. The fire continues to burn.
Coast Guard Senior Chief Petty Officer Mike O’Berry mentioned 126 workers were aboard when the explosion happened.
He said the 7 workers have been airlifted with a Naval air station close to New Orleans, then used to hospitals. Two of the seven have been taken to some burn unit in Mobile, Alabama.
The Coast Guard has choppers and boats around the scene looking for that missing crew members.
