Thaddeus Gibson drafted by Pittsburgh Steelers in fourth round
Following a restless night, Ohio State defensive end/linebacker Thaddeus Gibson, a Euclid Higher grad, was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers inside the fourth round this morning while using No. 116 overall pick.
Brad Cicala, Gibson’s agent, mentioned this morning he believed going to the draft Gibson would go in rounds two through four but thought he was a lot more likely to go in the late 2nd round towards the middle with the third. So there was some consternation in the Gibson camp when he was nevertheless undrafted when the third round ended Friday night.
But following generating many calls this morning, Cicala felt secure that Gibson wouldn’t slide past New Orleans while using last select inside the fourth round, though he was hoping the Saints would trade as much as get him. Pittsburgh also had been seeking hard at Gibson before the draft, as well as the Steelers’ 3-4 defense should offer a fantastic fit for Gibson’s potential skills as an outside linebacker.
Playing the Leo defensive end position at Ohio State, Gibson rushed the passer and dropped into coverage, accomplishing the points that should match that outdoors linebacker spot.
“He’ll learn from the best, and we’re happy about that,” Cicala said. “We wish he could have gone a little higher. But that’s kind of the way it goes sometimes.”
Gibson, at 6-foot-2 and 243 pounds, is comparable in size to the Steelers’ beginning outdoors linebackers, James Harrison (6-0, 242 pounds) and LaMarr Woodley (6-2, 265), so he’ll fit the program. There isn’t an instant will need there, but it’s effortless to imagine Gibson contributing on special teams from your commence while biding his time as a backup. He’ll also have quick competition within this draft class – the Steelers drafted outside linebacker Jason Worilds, a 6-1, 254-pounder, in the 2nd round.
