Tropical Storm Nicole Remnants to Strike Long Island
Most of Long Island, including Stony Brook University, has long been positioned inside a Flood Watch, using the South Shore inside a Higher Surf Advisory, as the remnants of Tropical Storm Nicole will influence the area via the day and evening on Thursday. Strong winds and a big level of rain are expected with all the potentially potent method.
The National Weather Service (NWS) has positioned Nassau and Suffolk Counties in a very Flood Watch along with a High Wind Watch. The southern portions of those counties have also been positioned inside a High Surf Advisory. Watches are issued when there may be strong prospective for the hazardous situations they are named for. A High Surf Advisory means that a storm will create hazardous waves, rip currents, and minor beach erosion.
NWS forecasts the storm to dump 3 to 5 inches of rain around Stony Brook University with sustained winds among 20 to 25 mph and gusting upwards of 60 mph.
Stony Brook University’s SB Alert page has issued an advisory with the NWS advisories and an estimate of three.5 inches of rain.
