Forecasters say that Tropical Storm Richard is spinning inside the Caribbean and could turn out to be a hurricane more than the weekend.

Richard’s maximum sustained winds Thursday are close 40 mph (65 kph). Extra strengthening is forecast for that seventeenth named storm with the Atlantic season.

The National Hurricane Center in Miami says the tropical storm could dump 4 to eight inches of rain on Jamaica with feasible isolated quantities of 12 inches. These rains could trigger life-threatening flash floods and mud slides. A tropical storm watch has been issued for Honduras.

Richard is located about 235 miles (375 kilometers) south-southeast of Grand Cayman and is transferring slowly.
